This was the first exhibition for The Developing Tank, a group of photographers from the Matakana area.

Artist's Statement

Living in Leigh, I am witnessing a steady change in the nature of the countryside, as the back roads are being sealed and developed.

I am an 'anti-landmark' photographer, preferring unremarkable subject matter to the spectacular; I shoot the places where we spend our daily lives in rural New Zealand. I want to create images that are not what people expect to see when looking for images of my region; hopefully, such images will resonate because they are not landmarks – and will say more about our rural environment, because their subject matter is commonplace.

It is my hope that these images will grow more interesting to look at in years to come, because the locations will have changed – unlike obviously spectacular or otherwise exceptional locations, which are more likely to be protected.
